Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) : This is the most common type of sleep apnea. It occurs when the throat muscles relax excessively during sleep, causing partial or total blockage of the airways. This type is often associated with snoring and can cause frequent awakenings without the person being aware of it.

Central Sleep Apnea (CSA) : Less common, it is caused by a malfunction in the brain that fails to send the necessary signals to the muscles responsible for breathing. Unlike OSA, there is no physical obstruction of the airways. This type is often seen in people with certain medical conditions such as heart failure or neurological disorders.

Mixed Apnea : This form combines the characteristics of the two previous types. It begins as central apnea and then progresses to obstructive apnea. It is often diagnosed in people with severe apnea or during a thorough evaluation in a sleep laboratory.
